Knocknakilla

Stone Circle, Standing Stone, Ring Cairn.

I was really looking forward to seeing the site at Knocknakilla, but as you can see from the images the weather was awful the day of my visit. I had just been to the Cloghboola Beg site inside Mill Street Country Park, Knocknakilla is about a kilometre from the entrance to the park on the northern slopes of Musherabeg. The circle is a five stoner, but only the portal stones and the western side stone remain standing, the recumbent is now lying prostrate. South-west of the circle is a large standing stone, one of a pair, the other lies prostrate between it and the circle. East of the circle a small radial cairn was discovered during peat-cutting in 1970. I will definitely visit again as the weather was a lot worse than my images suggest.

Situated: Eleven kilometres from Millstreet, County Cork. From Millstreet follow the signs for Millstreet Country Park, just after the entrance to the park take a right turn sign-posted, the site is about 300 metres down this road on your left.
